NERC Field Spectroscopy Facility Marks 1,000th Equipment Loan and 30 Years of Service

The NERC Field Spectroscopy Facility (FSF) – a “lending library” of advanced spectroscopic instruments managed by the National Centre for Earth Observation – has reached a major milestone: its 1,000th equipment loan.
The landmark loan was made to Winnifred Owoko, a researcher supervised by Dr Emma Tebbs at King’s College London. Winnifred will use the facility’s Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec 4 spectroradiometer to measure water-leaving reflectance from lakes in Kenya, supporting vital environmental research.
To celebrate the occasion, past and present staff gathered at the facility’s base at the University of Edinburgh. This year also marks 30 years of operation for FSF, which was originally established in 1994 at the University of Southampton as the Equipment Pool for Field Spectroscopy.

Reflecting on the achievement, Dr Steven Hancock (University of Edinburgh), Director of FSF, said:
FSF is delighted to have supported 1,000 users across UK science and NERC’s remit. We continue to expand our capabilities and equipment to ensure we can help the next 1,000 users make new discoveries“

Prof Martin Wooster (King’s College London), NCEO Divisional Director for EO Instrumentation and Facilities, added:
This is an incredible milestone for our NERC supported Facility, and one that is testament to the long-term need from the NERC and wider environmental science community for these types of remotely sensed field and lab measurements. The Facilities loans and expertise support both environmental science and technological developments such as new satellite missions – and to reach 1000 loans to users is an really amazing” achievement.”
