New funding announced for Space4Climate

The National Centre for Earth Observation welcomes the announcement by Beth Greenaway, UK Space Agency, of three years of new funding for the Space4Climate activity in the UK. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is also announced as a new funding member.

Space4Climate is a neutral, not-for-profit, membership organisation, chaired by the UK Space Agency, hosted by the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) and based at the University of Reading. It brings together government, industry and academia, working in partnership to support and raise the profile of the UK’s world-leading climate science and services community. It is critical that climate information is trustable, accessible and available to all enabling climate services to grow and serve local people and global needs.

NCEO and the UK science community are experts in the production of high-quality climate data and in research investigations to translate data into models and information products with fidelity and through new approaches.

John Remedios, NCEO Director said:

‘Space4Climate enables an excellent community bringing together the different elements needed to galvanise climate services that need a seamless supply chain of trusted data.

This funding will ensure that vital climate services development is supported in the UK, bringing new commercial activities alongside government-supported activity.

The active participation of government is welcomed. It is significant that Defra is joining Space4Climate, recognising the role it has played already in demonstrating peatland and urban heat island mitigation and adaptation utility.’
