LeicestershireLive Innovation Awards 2023 – NCEO Nominated for Innovation in Space

Congratulations to Professor Heiko Balzter and his team involved in the development of the Forest Alerts system which has been nominated for a LeicestershireLive Innovation award.

The project has been selected as a finalist in the Innovation in Space category and the winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday the 16th of February 2023, at the National Space Centre.

Developed by Professor Heiko Balzter, at the National Centre for Earth Observation and Director of the Centre of Landscape and Climate Research (CLCR) at the University of Leicester, and Geology and Environment researchers Dr Ciaran Robb and Dr Pedro Rodriguez-Veiga.

Forest Alert is a system that sends out rapid deforestation alerts to a mobile app and enables communication with thousands of app users in the field via a central dashboard. This enables effective protection of forest assets from illegal logging.

The Forest Alert System has been rolled out across Kenya in order to protect the country’s threatened ecosystems. The project was the winner of the Copernicus masters, Sustainable Living Challenge and the team are excited that the project has been recognised by the LeicestershireLive Innovation Awards.
